Disjointed with overrides

I think I succeeded in making the Disjointed style look a little more appealing with some overrides. Tell me what you think.

Problem summary: Transparent background, opaque text

The question: "I know a lot of people are able to get the effect of a transparent background with a low opacity and dark text, but it there any way around that for just the background?"

-hakukaen (link)

The answer: The only way I can think of solving this problem is by putting one DIV on top of another. The first one will just be the transparent background. The DIV on top would be the text.

I started making a style for this but I got lazy. :-/

The question: "How can I place a banner at the top of my journal? I have a paid account and I am not very good with html - yet. ;) I feel that I have a pretty good knowledge of the livejournal system. Try to go into detail for me though - I get easily confused! Haha! Thanks!"

-copperpenny (link)

The answer: No problem. Just go to the LASTN_PAGE (or WHATEVER_PAGE) section of your style (the very big textbox at the bottom if you're using the "new" editor), find the <body> tag and add whatever you want after that. So if you want to add a banner, you just do <img src="http://www.whatever.com/image.gif">. But remember: LJ TOS forbids any money-generating banners on their site.

TOS Section XVI, "Member Conduct":
...You agree to NOT use the Service to:...

16. Engage in commercial activities within LiveJournal or on behalf of LiveJournal.com without prior approval. This includes, but is not limited to, the following activities:

a. Displaying a banner that is designed to profit you or any other business or organization; and
b. Displaying banners for services that provide cash or cash-equivalent prizes to users in exchange for hyperlinks to their web sites.

Problem summary: Filters ("making links blurred and/or appear backwards")
Answered by: quasidan
Comments: 10 (add comment)
The question: How do I make my links blurred and/or appear backwards when I hover over them?

-Anonymous (link)

The answer: You can make these effects using filters, a part of CSS that only works in Internet Explorer, IIRC.

Basically, you use the filter like this:
a:hover {
width: auto;
height: auto;
filter: blur(direction=135, strength=3);
color: red;
}

Or filter: fliph();. Or
filter: blur(direction=135, strength=3) fliph(); (for multiple filters).

Here are different filters available. I'm only including the popular ones used. I'm just giving examples because you can figure it out from there:
filter:alpha(opacity=20);
filter:alpha(opacity=70, finishopacity=5, startx=2, starty=40, endx=100, endy=530, style=3);

filter:blur(direction=270, strength=4);

filter: fliph();

filter: flipv();

filter: glow(color=FF00FF, strength=15);

filter: shadow(color=448888, direction=135);

an exampleCollapse )

So how do you add this to your links?

Put this in the style sheet:

a:link {
color: anything;
width or height: X;
}

a:hover {
width or height: same X;
filter:whatever();
}

Filters need a width or height value to work.

STYLEHELP STYLE: Style #168396 has some filters. The sidebar (with the altposter) is fliph()'ed, and the links change on hover.

The question: "I want to get a table down both the left and right sides of my journal. Much like what mandelion has now. I've been playing around with this for seriously 12 hours now. The entries in the memories here, ljdesigners, and howto either confuse the hell out of me, or just don't work."

-woolf (link)

The answer: I already answered this in How to add a text box on the left (paid users only), but here's an even simpler version.

Step 1: go to the *_PAGE section and in the <body> tag, do this:

<table> <tr>

 <td valign=top>
   PUT LEFT MENU CONTENT HERE
 </td>

 <td valign=top>
   PUT MAIN CONTENT HERE
 </td>

 <td valign=top>
   PUT RIGHT MENU CONTENT HERE
 </td>

</tr> </table>

Problem summary: Making the sidebar stay in place

The question: "Basically, the style (163755) moves like any other journal, but what I want it to do is make the entries scroll while the sidebar remains stationary. Basically, I want what quasidan did on his one style [...]"

-brainsickbtrfly (link)

The answer: style 163755 is invalid, so I'll just explain how to make a sidebar that stays in place.

You create two DIVs with position: absolute;. Give them both equal height (probably 100%) and make their width equal 100% when combined (20% and 80%, for example). Then make sure they both have the overflow: auto property and you're done.

For a more detailed explanation on how to do this, see More information about absolute positioning.

Problem summary: Forcing the font—sometimes

The question: "I want to force font on friends pages to keep entries like this from upsetting the feel of my journal. I went to howto and used the force font on friends journal memory. The problem is, it changed the font color and size for everything. I am using 3 diffrent colors. Then I tried hard coding the color in FRIENDS_EVENT right between the %%event%% and that didn't work either. "

-c0c0c0 (link)

The answer: I'm not sure if this is what you meant, but here's what I did (I based it off Generator because that's what you're using, it seems):

I went to FRIENDS_EVENT and wrapped a DIV around %%event%% itself called "changemyfontplz". Then in the style sheet, I put this:

.changemyfontplz, .changemyfontplz * {
font-family: Arial!important;
font-size: 12pt!important;
color: #C0C0C0!important
}

See STYLEHELP STYLE #162164 for an example. If this is not what you meant please comment.

The Question: She wants to change the text from the current mood/music or mood/music default LJ states such as mine says to something else entirely, some customized to her liking, no doubt.

-asianmuse (link)

The Answer: adcott figured it out on xxcustomization about eight months ago. Here's the short version. The full explanation is here:

1. Put this in the style sheet:
    .mood, .amusic {display:none}

2. Put this in LASTN_CURRENT (of course, you need to format it so that it fits into your style; see the referenced entry for generator, tabular etc.):
    <span class="%%lc:what%%">music override: %%value%%</span>
    <span class="a%%lc:what%%">mood override: %%value%%</span>

I was wondering if knows how to change the font color to journal entries and while I'm on the subject in comments as well? My journal background is black and my font is black also.I want my font to contrast the background color. I once saw a journal with a shiny chrome colored font and one with a rainbow colored font. If anyone could share their wisdom with me it would be greatly appreciated. =)

answer

well, you need to to change the font colour (as well as every other sections color in your journal) in the Modify Journal section. Have you played around with the pre set colours? You can change your journal text colour by changing the "page text" colour. It should be set to #000000, so you gotta change it to whatever colour you would like :) Say you want it white, change it to #ffffff, yellow? simply try typing in yellow (red, green, blue can also work for ya). You can find a html colour chart here http://www.maxkolor.com/palette.html this will give you all the codes for different colours.

Just test ideas out, you cannot really go wrong. (ps make sure you have the "custom colors" button selected.)

Another way to do it is by adding a font tag manually before each of your entries (this is tedious though) < font color="#whatever" > then your text should change to that colour. This also works for < font size="whatever" color="#whatever" face="whatever" > etc size being your font size obviously and face being the style of font (arial, verdana etc).. (minus the spaces before and after the < and > )

If this however doesnt work let me know, I can have a fiddle with it for you. It might need some serious tweaking. If your journal is paid you can manually change the colours by creating a style and editing the code yourself.
(sorry if im being patronising, im not sure of hat you know and do not know, so am being safe)

Problem summary: Adding the friends pic to disjointed (paid)
Answered by: quasidan
Comments: (add comment)
The question: "Is there any way to make friends icons show up on the "friend" page instead of the uaual little box with simply the name?"

-seluna (link)

The answer: Yes, you can do that, but it will look ugly.

Here's how you do it:
1. Go to FRIENDS_FRIENDPIC and put in the code. I think it's <img src="%%src%%"> or something like that.

2. Go to FRIENDS_EVENT and all the two others and add the image (I think it's %%friendpic%% but I'm not sure. It says whatever is it above the box where you add it). You want to add it in the table with the "altposter" class.

That's it. But it will look disgusting.
